Paccekabuddhas — silent buddhas

In the Isigili Sutta, the Buddha lists the paccekabuddha’s names and their accomplishments. Isigili means “the mountain which eats the isis.” The Buddha lists these paccekabuddhas encouraging listeners to know their names, know their accomplishments and to invoke them as a practice for protection & wealth.

Most of the time when we see the word isi, it refers to paccekabuddhas. It can be used to refer to practitioners outside of the Buddhist tradition as well. In both Sanskrit and Pali, the Buddha himself is referred to has Mahaṛṣi or Mahaisi – it is not an exception to distinguish buddhas from paccekabuddhas. It does not mean that the Buddha is a Vedic ascetic. We cannot attach solely to the meaning of the word but always look at the context in which it is used.
